March Numbers

Another month in 2013 that saw almost not cycling and/or running.  While I was in the pool plenty, when I compare this months numbers with March 2010, 2011, and 2012, I am way down.  At first, I was a bit alarmed, but then I quickly realized that I'm training for a completely different animal.  When I travel to Indy, my events will total less than a 00:01.30 over the course of three days.  In each of those previous years, I was either training for a 2.4 mile swim as part of an Ironman or a 1.2 mile swim as part of a relay.  What I've giving up in volume, Frank has replaced with intensity.  Also, there is no way I could bang out the same yardage doing butterfly and/or backstroke vs. 100% freestyle.  It's just funny, to me, to see the distinct change in focus when I've been so focused on triathlon and IM.

On Sunday, April 7th, I was supposed to do the 3k swim leg of a relay for the Leadman triathlon in Tempe.  There were a few distinct reasons why I ultimately had to find a replacement, but I don't want to bore you with any of them.  That being said, my teammates (James and Klas) are in good hands with Garey Bryant as he is every bit as good of a swimmer as I am and is training for IMAZ 2013 as well.  I ended up volunteering, so hopefully I'll be pulling Garey out of the water first!  With that said, I entered the 50 fly, back, and free events of the 2013 AZ LMSC State/Zone Swimming Championships in Oro Valley, AZ (just north of Tucson) the weekend before.  Funny thing about this meet is that it's being held at the same pool (Canyon del Oro High School) that I was once an assistant coach at.   This will be my first time back there about 20 years.

OK, enough of all that, let's get to the monthly numbers:

MARCH 2010 TOTALS:
SWIM = 47500 yards
BIKE = 404.5 miles
RUN = 51.2 miles

MARCH 2011 TOTALS:
SWIM = 38614 yards
BIKE = 392.2 miles
RUN = 0 miles

MARCH 2012 TOTALS:
SWIM = 40258 yards
BIKE = 407.25 miles
RUN = 8 miles

MARCH 2013 TOTALS:
SWIM = 29525 yards
BIKE = 30.01 miles
RUN = 8 miles
